Chapter 19: Dynamic documents
Design your Adobe InDesign CS4 document so that it can be exported to SWF, XFL, or PDF. For SWF and XFL files,
specify the page size according to monitor resolution (such as 800 x 600), and then add buttons, hyperlinks, and page
transitions before exporting in either SWF or XFL format. For PDF files, add bookmarks, hyperlinks, buttons, movies,
and sound clips to create dynamic documents.
Dynamic web documents for Flash
To create slideshow-type content that can be played in Flash Player, you can export to either SWF or XFL. The main
difference is that SWF files are ready to be viewed and cannot be edited, whereas XFL files must be edited in Adobe
Flash Professional to be viewed in Adobe Flash Player.
SWF An exported SWF file is ready for viewing in Adobe Flash Player and may include interactive elements such as
page transitions, hyperlinks, and navigation buttons.
XFL An exported XFL file includes no interactive elements. Instead, you open the XFL file in Flash Pro, where you can
add animation and other effects before exporting to SWF.
Export to Flash
A. Export directly to SWF B. Export to XFL for editing in Flash Pro
Create interactive SWF (Flash) files for the web
When you export to SWF, you create an interactive file that’s ready for viewing in Adobe Flash Player or in a web
browser. The SWF file can include buttons, page transitions, and hyperlinks added in InDesign. SWF files exported
from InDesign do not include movies or audio files. Exporting to SWF is a good way to create an interactive slideshow,
or a flip book, based on an InDesign document.
If you want to edit the document in Flash Pro before creating the SWF file, export to XFL instead of SWF. See Create
XFL (Flash) files for the web” on page 520.
